Whispering Vault Characters

The Whispering Vault is a roleplaying game where the characters are Stalkers, beings who have transcended their humanity to act as agents for the beings that maintain reality. Regrettably, sometimes those beings (the Unbidden) fall from their station, for various reasons, and must be dealt with, for which the Stalkers are summoned. The Avatars of the Stalkers are placed into mortal shells (Vessels) to be sent down to the mortal reality, where they must retrieve the fallen being before they corrupt reality.

Stalkers are limited when in the mortal reality in that they cannot openly use their powers, while the beings they stalk can: Stalkers, therefore, have to use their powers in such ways as to make them seem natural. (For example, Emma Steele will reach into her sleeve or behind her back to use her Conjuration Discipline produce a weapon.) Using powers blatantly before witnesses can cause a punitive reaction from reality, somethings Stalkers do their best to avoid in order to complete their mission.

Stalkers all have their personal Domain: the place where they rest, the place they in which are most comfortable, the place that reflects their very nature.

Emma Steele, Secret Agent

At GenCon 1998, I played in a Whispering Vault demo game, where I got to create my own character. Now, remember that a major part of the beginning of the game is what is called “the Summons”, that is the year that the “Avengers” movie came out, and in the original series, there was the summons “Mrs. Peele, we’re needed.” Thus, Emma Steele was born.

Description

Tall, slender but not skinny, with long brown hair, and dressed in a tight‐fitting leather cat‐suit: that’s Emma Steele.

Domain

Emma’s Domain is a mod-60’s London, where famous landmarks stand side‐by‐side with faceless, mirror‐windowed office buildings that house the Intelligence services. The streets are crowded with bright mod-60’s colors, London bobbies and double‐decker red buses. Emma’s own lodgings are in a fashionable apartment block, where she occupies the entire floor.

Prelude

Emma Stavrosky was a code clerk in the British Intelligence service. It was a job that was mostly devoted to filing, indexing, retrieving, and more filing. It was boring, and she secretly fantasized about being a secret agent, like the one that the British author Ian Fleming was writing about. But then British television began broadcasting a new TV series called “The Avengers”. At first, Emma was taken by the suave, debonair character of John Steed, but when the character of Emma Peele was introduced, Emma Stavrosky knew without a doubt that she wanted to be just like her.

But it wasn’t to be. Emma was not secret agent material. She was politely rebuffed when she asked for transfer to the active section. But when a Stalker discovered her unknown talent for Stalking, she became in truth what she secretly wanted to be; Emma Steele, secret agent!

Serena

Serena was the first Whispering Vault character I created, largely to test out the rather simple character creation system. I was intrigued by the game, as Mike Nystul was a name I recognized from my regular reading of the gaming APA Alarums & Excursions. It is definitely an interesting setup, well worth investigating.

Description

Serena is tall, but her height seems to reassure instead of seeming imposing. She wears a dark blue hooded cloak, cinqued with a silver cord that emphasizes her slender waist and full breasts; silver spirals seem to slowly spin within its blue depths. The hood covers her face, but long, curly black hair spills down from the hood, and within its darkness, two softly, gently glowing blue eyes can be seen. When she (rarely) pulls back her hood, it reveals a tender, gently‐smiling face. She wears her Keys on a large ring attacked to the silver cord around her waist.

Domain

Her Domain is a dim, shadowed maze of lushly carpeted corridors, where invitingly soft divans await in dark, curtained alcoves; the prevailing colors (in fact, the only colors) are restful shades of blue. Above every alcove is a bust of Hypnos, the Greek God of Sleep. Soft, soothing, relaxing electronic music plays in the background, spiraling patterns slowly spin on every wall, and the air is filled with a heady, incense‐like perfume that rises from the multitudes of bouquets of dark flowers along the walls. Serena can always be found reclining on a large divan in the center of the maze, attended to by her Servitors. Dreams are quite as important as waking, she will often say, as they make known what is not known to the waking mind.

Her Servitors appear as dark‐haired, attractive but indistinct young men and women wearing Grecian robes, with soft voices, gentle but austere faces and compelling blue eyes that slowly pulsate.

Prelude

Serena was Dr. Samantha Matthews, a respected psychologist and ardent researcher into dreams and sleep disorders. It was through a patient who had been adversely affected by the Unbidden and unable to sleep at all (her dreams had been eaten away) that she met a group of Stalkers, who saw her questing spirit and made her a Stalker, too.
